I believe I made myself clear here and here, but just in case I'm gonna say it all again: Reing has become one of my favorite shows of this past seasons and it made it to the top spots on my list really quick. And as the other shows I follow/watch, this one also ended last month and, obviously, I'm gonna make a review about it so you're all cordally invited to continue reading after the break.
El tema del que trata, ya lo conté en su día así que ahora iré contando lo que ha ido pasando en la serie: Mary, Reina de Escocia, se encuentra en Francia prometida con el Príncipe Francis desde que ambos eran niños. Esa unión está destinada a servir como alianza entre ambos países y hacerse más fuertes mutuamente, sobretodo para Escocia. Al principio ni uno ni otro esperan realmente llegar a amarse, puesto que antes que otra cosa son (o van a ser) reyes y tienen cosas más importantes en las que pensar. Pero todo cambia cuando primero ella se enamora de él, y poco después a Francis le sucede lo mismo. Ambos están más decididos que nunca a casarse, pero existe un peligro que se cierne sobre su felicidad: una profecía no demasiado bonita por parte de Nostradamus en cuanto a lo larga que será su vida en común si ese matrimonio llega a buen puerto. Dado el cariño que Mary siente por Francis, está convencida en hacer todo lo que tenga que hacerse para evitar poner en peligro la vida del príncipe de Francia. Así que se aleja de él a pesar de lo que siente su corazón, y mientras Francis sale de la corte real para irse lejos, es su hermanastro quien se queda como heredero al trono y por lo tanto también prometido de Mary.
I already explained what the show is about but I’ll do it once again so I can also tell you about the important things that happened on it lately. So: Mary, Queen of Scots, is living in France so she can wed the next king, Prince Francis to whom she has been engaged since both were childs. That union is meant to unify both countries and make each other stronger, especially Scotland. At the beginning none of them think that they will love each other, that they will not be really in love just because they will be rulers someday and that should be the most important point in their lives. But, of course, little by little Mary starts to fall in love with Francis and the same happens to him. Both are really eager to get married once and for all but there’s one thing that will keep them apart: a prophecy about Francis’s destiny if he weds Mary. And since she is really in love with him, she decides that he has to be away from her and that they can’t be. So, despite what her heart feels, she decides to push him away (really away) and that’s when Francis’s step-brother becomes ‘handy’ to the kingdom: he becomes the heir of France and also Mary’s new fiancé.
Obviamente, esto último está enteramente inventado por parte de los guionistas de la serie, quienes introdujeron en la historia a Sebastian (el hermanastro en cuestión) desde el principio. Y también quienes avisaron de que la veracidad de la serie comparada con lo que realmente pasó, no sería tal.
Obviously, that last part is absolutely made up and it didn’t happen in the real story (real French history). But the writters decided to put Sebastian, King’s Henry bastard son, on the show and they warned us about it since the very beginning so… keeping that in mind can be a good idea if you watch the show and you like history (as I do).
Como iba diciendo: Sebastian como heredero, Francis fuera de plano, Mary esforzándose (sin que le cueste demasiado además) por enamorarse de Sebastian, los Reyes Henry y Catherine de Francia con sus propios follones... trama no le falta, básicamente. Pero sí he de decir que excepto uno o dos, esa etapa no ha sido mi favorita. No por la actuación de los actores, para nada (aplaudo mucho la actuación de Adelaide Kane y Torrance Coombs) sino porque notaba como lo que se contaba dejaba de tener demasiado sentido. Y justo entonces resulta que las cosas vuelven a girar inesperadamente: Francis se ve forzado a volver a la corte real francesa, se encuentra con Mary y ella debe tomar una decisión que cambiará su vida y la de todos a su al rededor. Finalmente se decanta por estar con su verdadero amor, Francis y por fin tiene lugar la boda real entre ambos.
As I was saying: Sebastian is the new heir, Francis is gone, Mary is trying her best to love Bash (I must say that it doesn’t take her a long time at all, actually), King Henry and Queen Catherine of France are dealing with their own problems… a really good plot in general. But I shall be honest and say that it wasn’t my favorite period of the show. The story became a bit slow and I felt like if they were taking a path that would lead them to a dead end, whatsoever. It was not the actor’s fault, not at all. I loved their performances, as I did for the whole season. Just that.. well, the lack of veracity was becoming a big deal. And just when I felt that way: PLOT TWIST!! Francis is forced to go back to the French court, he meets Mary again and she is the one making a decision that will change not only their lives but everyone’s. She finally chooses Francis, her true love, and the royal wedding finally takes place.
Y dejadme hacer un inciso aquí: todo ese capítulo con el corazón en un puño, de sorpresa en sorpresa. Estaba pensado para que fuera el final de la serie si es que no la renovaban para la temporada que viene, pero como al final sí ha sido renovada, pues quedó como final antes de un parón de dos (o tres, no me acuerdo) semanas. Me habría parecido un buen final si ese hubiera sido el caso, pero estoy inmensamente feliz por que no haya sido así.
Now, leave me take a quick break to say that I had my heart on my hand the whole episode, suffering like an idiot (I already knew they will end up together). In fact, that one was meant to be the last episode of the show if it wasn’t picked up for a second season and I must congratulate the writers on their good job. BUT, do not worry pals: Reign will come back next year. And that also means that the show had more episodes after the ‘wedding’ one.
A partir de la boda, todo se vuelve aún más complicado: el Rey de Francia empieza a perder la cabeza (inmensa interpretación de Alan Van Sprang), la Reina y Francis no saben muy bien qué hacer para ponerle remedio a ese problema y por su parte también se presentan líos y más líos de faldas que no solo pertenecen a los protagonistas sino también a los personajes secundarios como las damas de Mary.
Por otro lado, el hecho es que tanto Francis como Mary ahora deben dar el siguiente paso en su relación: tener un hijo. Embarazo que no termina de llegar. Pero el que sí lo hace es el de una de las damas de Mary, Lola, quien después de haber pasado una noche con Francis en el tiempo en el que él estuvo fuera de la corte mientras Sebastian ocupaba su lugar en el trono y en el corazón de Mary, y quien ahora se encuentra embarazada de su hijo. ¿Y qué decide hacer doña Lola? Ocultarlo de todas las maneras que pueda. Pero obviamente eso no es algo que se pueda esconder así como así... aunque finalmente encuentra la manera.
Por su parte, Mary se entera pero accede a guardar el secreto puesto que es la decisión de Lola, su "amiga". Y Francis mientras tanto sin enterarse de la misa la mitad, preocupado por su padre el Rey Henry y por embarazar a su mujer, de quien está totalmente enamorado y a quien por cierto termina por contarle su aventura con Lola a pesar de no saber nada de lo que realmente está pasando con ella.
Since that moment forward, everything changes and gets more difficult to everyone: King Henry of France starts to do weird things and he has a very weird behavior. To say it in short terms: he is losing his mind (spectacular performance by Alan Van Sprang btw). Queen Catherine doesn’t really know what to do to help him and put an end to this madness, but that’s not all. There are more and more love affairs at court concerning not only the royals but also the other characters, as Mary’s friends for example.
On the other hand the happy couple, Mary and Francis, is now married so they need to make the next step on their relationship: having an heir. A pregnancy that doesn’t happen to them, but does happen to one of Mary’s ladies-in-waiting: Lola. And another plot-twist: she is pregnant with Francis’s child. Yes. I’m not joking. After spending one night together when Francis was very far away from Mary, the consequences knock on Lola’s door, as you can see. But the father of the child is not aware of the situation since Lola wants to keep it in secret and asks Mary to help her find a husband sooner rather than later so she can go away, leaving everything and everyone behind without wanting to look back.
Como podéis ver: nadie se aburre en la corte. Y si os estáis preguntando por Sebastian (hijo bastardo de Henry por cierto): a él lo casa el Rey a la fuerza con una de las damas de Mary, Kenna.
In the meantime, the crazy King decides that it’s a good idea to wed his bastard son with one of his own mistresses. And so, the wedding between Sebastian and Kenna takes place because the king wants it that way. End of the discussion.
Y lo que al principio parecía un chiste malo, al final resulta ser la mejor opción tanto para uno como para la otra. Sebastian se encuentra en una posición difícil después de haber "querido" subir al trono sin éxito, y aunque su padre (el rey) lo destierra, finalmente por unas cosas y otras, termina volviendo a la corte. Aún enamorado de Mary, quien ahora es su cuñada tras casarse con su hermanastro. Por su parte, Kenna es una de las amantes del Rey pero no la más importante, y aunque le pide que le encuentre un noble con quien casarse, finalmente con quien termina es con Bash. Ambos ni se caen bien ni se dejan de caer. Son una de esas parejas que, como dije antes, se usan como ironía o chiste. Pero como al Rey le llueve en la azotea, pues los casa y a la mierda, a ver quién le lleva la contraria. La sorpresa es que, en realidad, los dos comienzan a sentir algo el uno por el otro y finalmente parece que estamos ante una de de las parejas sorpresa de la serie, además de prometedora.
I have to admit that although it surprised me very, very much, this couple has become one of my favorites. Sebastian isn’t in a good position after reaching for the throne that belongs to his brother and even when his father commands him to go away, Bash finds his way back to the castle and to their lives once again and has to endure the difficult situation of watching how happy his brother and Mary (the woman he loves) are. Kenna, one of the mistresses of the King, asks him to find her a match so she can get married and be near him at the same time without having further problems. So the King does find her someone: his own son, Bash. As I said: they are one of those couples that you couldn’t imagine together until it really happens. A cruel irony, to say it somehow… And the King is gone nuts, so who the hell will be the one to discuss his decisions? I wouldn’t if I was there, that’s for sure. But the real thing is that after some time, both Bash and Kenna start to feel something for each other so we really are facing a surprise couple that will give us good moments on the show, that’s for sure.
Entre pitos y flautas, enfrentamientos y líos variados (como podéis comprobar) llegamos a los dos últimos capítulos:
Between the jigs and the reels we reach the last two episodes of this season:
Después de que Francis se fuera a recuperar Calais (territorio francés ocupado por Inglaterra) con ayuda del ejército privado del tío de su mujer, el Duque de Guise, vuelve a casa victorioso y con muchas ansias de ver de nuevo a su reina, Mary, quien se debate entre luchar por la corona de Inglaterra o dejarla ir a su prima Elizabeth. Sea cual sea su decisión, Francis promete respetarla y apoyarla. Pero su padre tiene otros planes: pretende que Mary sea la nueva reina inglesa cueste lo que cueste. Cuando Catherine y la propia Mary se enteran, saben que no pueden dejar que estalle una nueva guerra y que el Rey debe ser alejado de su corona al haber perdido la cabeza por completo. Obviamente, Francis no está de acuerdo y les pide un último intento que él mismo llevará a cabo: se irá de caza con su padre e intentará hacerle cambiar de opinión. Y realmente lo consigue, aunque no precisamente para bien.
Sabiendo que el plan de Francis no funcionará, Mary y Catherine trabajan juntas para acabar con la vida de Henry. Aunque en el último momento todo se tuerce. Así que el tema es: ninguno de los dos planes funcionan. Henry sigue vivo y está cada vez peor (como unas maracas vamos).
After Francis goes into battle for Calais (English territory in France) leading french soldiers with the helping hand of the private army of his wife’s uncle, the Duc of Guise, he returns home safe wanting to see Mary more than ever. She is in the middle of her own battle: she has to decide if she is going to fight for the English crown or leave her cousin Elisabeth be the new Queen of England. Whatever hes decision is, Francis promises her that he will respect her and be by her side no matter what. But obviously, King Henry doesn’t think the same way: he wants England and he will have it, no matter the consequences. When Catherine and Mary hear about it, they both know that Henry’s ideas will bring a new war to France so they need to work together to stop the King. Obviously Francis does not agree with their plan and insists that he can make him change his mind and, actually, he does.
Por su parte, Lola está felizmente recién casada con un noble llamado Lord Julian...
On the other hand, Lola is happily married to a noble man called Lord Julian…
O eso es lo que ella se piensa. En realidad se ha casado con el secretario de Julian, que resulta haber muerto hace meses. Cuando la familia de ese noble está a punto de descubrirse el pastel, todo da un no demasiado agradable giro y Lola tiene que irse de su nuevo hogar, dejar ir a su esposo (cuyo nombre real es Remi) y emprender el camino de vuelta a la corte francesa. De vuelta a Mary.
At least that’s what she thinks: Lord Julian died some months earlier and his secretary is the one who married Lola, impersonating his master. When the real Lord Julian’s family pops up at Lola’s new home, everything gets crazy and wild: the relative of Julian ends up dead, Remi (the real name of Lola’s husband) has to disappear so no one discovers the truth and Lola sees herself forced to go back to court. To Mary.
Sebastian está mientras tanto ocupado intentando averiguar quién demonios es 'The Darkness', una supuesta criatura que obliga a los paganos a hacer ofrendas humanas en los bosques cercanos a palacio. Es su propia lucha, por su pasado y por lo que esos paganos le obligaron a hacer, hace no demasiado. Al mismo tiempo Kenna y un niño que el propio Bash encontró escondido y abandonado en los bosques, al que deciden dejar vivir con ellos, se van a su propia casa.
Ese penúltimo capitulo termina con el Rey Henry planeando su próximo paso: si quiere conquistar el trono inglés debe poner a Mary como reina en él. Pero quien reinará a su lado no será Francis, sino él mismo. ¿Cómo? Fácil: debe terminar con la vida de su propio hijo y después casarse con Mary....
Meanwhile, Bash is pretty busy dealing with ‘The Darkness’, a creature living in the forests that demands human blood as sacrifices. It is Bash personal fight because of his past and what this pagans forced him to do not long ago. At the same time Kenna and a child that Bash found hidden in the forest leave the royal castle to go to their own home.
In this previous-to-last episode the things end up like this: King Henry is planning his next move, which is to make Mary become the new Queen of England so he can finally have the country. But the one who will rule by her side is not Francis but himself, Henry. How? Easy peasy: he will kill his own son and then marry Mary…
Y así llegamos al último capítulo de la temporada. Yo con el corazón en una mano y la bebida en la otra, para ahogar mis penas en ella.
And finally: the season finale. My heart pounding on my chest like crazy, ready to suffer. Here we go:
Con el Rey como una cabra, Francis comprende que su padre está perdido y que a pesar de no poder hacer nada para pararle, deben hacerlo. Y mientras él, Mary y Catherine ponen a funcionar sus cabezas, Henry procede a comenzar las celebraciones por la recuperación de Calais. En la costa, con una batalla ficticia entre dos navíos. Solo que la batalla resulta ser real y se empiezan a saltar todas las alarmas de todo el mundo. No contento con eso, decide repetirlo al día siguiente...
Y por su lado (por si no fuera suficiente), Lola se pone de parto antes de llegar a la corte francesa. Tras muchas horas intentando dar a luz sin éxito, tanto su vida como la del bebé pasan a estar en peligro (no olvidemos la época en la que estaban). Es entonces cuando decide escribir una carta a Mary, diciéndole lo que está pasando y pidiéndole que le cuente la verdad de una vez por todas a Francis.
Pero volveré a ese punto en un momento. Antes prefiero comentar que al día siguiente del espectáculo dado por orden de Henry, se realiza una justa, en la que el propio rey participará. Pero la suerte no está de su lado, su oponente le derriba y le hiere de gravedad.
King Henry is crazier than ever and Francis finally understands that he cannot be saved, what he needs is to be put away from the crown. So meanwhile Catherine, Mary and Francis try to find a way to do it, Henry starts the celebration for winning Calais to the English. Things go wrong, the King is the only one who doesn’t notice it and he decides to celebrate it once again the next day…
Lola, on her way ‘home’ suddenly goes into labor before reaching the court. After so many hours trying to give birth to the baby she is not able to do so and their lives start to be in jeopardy. That’s when she makes the decision to write a letter to Mary telling her what’s going on and also asking her to tell Francis the truth.
I’ll go back to that in a second. Before I do so I’d like to say that the thing on the second day of ‘Calais celebrations’ goes even worse than the first one. Henry takes part in a joust and gets a badly injured.
Así que el capítulo termina así: el rey, después de contarle a Francis uno de sus mayores secretos, fallece.
So: the King dies in his bed after telling his son a secret he has carried for all his life.

ESE momento en el que sale de la habitación de su padre y se encuentra de frente con su hermano, con Bash... OMG. Lloré y volveré a llorar cada vez que lo vea.Francis is the new King of France.
Now, THAT moment when we could see Bash arriving (late) to the court and meets his brother… OMG. I will cry forever every time I watch that scene. It’s just…

Justo a la mañana siguiente, Mary recibe la carta de Lola y le cuenta a Francis la verdad. Ambos están de acuerdo en que él debe ir a buscar a Lola y al bebé y asegurarse de que están bien. Pero en ese momento llegan noticias urgentes y muy malas a las vidas de todos: la peste está asolando el país y nadie puede abandonar la corte, para no contagiarse. Francis está a punto de irse cuando Mary se lo cuenta, pidiéndole que no vaya, que se quede a salvo puesto que es el nuevo Rey de Francia. Él no hace caso y le pide que recapacite puesto que están hablando de la vida de Lola y de su hijo, puede que su único hijo. Y como una imagen (y dos gifs) valen más que mil palabras:
Next day, Mary gets the letter that Lola sent her and tells Francis the truth. Both agree on going to get Lola and the baby to make sure they are fine. But in that moment a warning arrives to the court: the plague is devastating the country and no one can leave the palace for their own safety. Francis is on his way out when Mary reaches him and asks him to stay, he is the new King and he cannot take risks like this but asks his wife to think about the situation since they’re talking about saving Lola’s life and probably the childs too. And because an image (and two gifs) can speak for themselves, here you go:
Y señoras y señores esto ha sido todo hasta octubre. ¿Cómo se quedan? Pues eso.
And ladies and gentlemen this is it until October (more or less). How do you feel? Exactly.
Ha pasado un mes y yo sigo sin superar no tener un capítulo cada semana, por lo que puede que después de verano me den un premio a "persona que más veces ha visto una y otra vez la primera temporada de una serie", porque sino a ver como sobrevivo... ¡¡que dura es la vida de alguien que sigue muchas series!!
It’s been a month and I’m still trying to overcome the depression of not having an episode every week, so after summer it’s pretty possible that I receive the award for “the person who has watched the first season of Reign over and over again”. Waddo I do? *hides under a rock* My life is a misery, I follow way too many shows…
At this point, I’m a little confused: the level of the show is pretty high if we speak about the whole season so I feel very proud of it & the actors. I loved this show since the very first time I saw it and completely fell for it. But because of that, something inside of me is not 100% satisfied about the season finale. I knew Henry had to die in some point, I just didn’t imagine that it will happen on the finale. Maybe they could keep him alive a little longer and give us a different ending. Or maybe they could give us Henry’s death but also something else. Anyways, I will miss Alan Van Sprang toooooooo much. Way too much tbqh. He nailed it and I would give him an ovation if I could (I did in my home tho LOL). About the other things happening on the last episode: I imagined it would be like it was, more or less. I expected something else, as I just said. A new plot-twist, a big big surprise, something that shocked me so much I would be like wanting to throw chairs out my window (metaphorically speaking). I don’t know. It’s not that I didn’t like it tho. As I said (and I will say it over and over again), I really love this show.
Destaco una vez más las brillantes actuaciones por parte de todos y cada uno de los actores: Toby Regbo, Torrance Coombs, Adelaide Kane, Alan Van Sprang, Megan Follows... Todos. De verdad.
To end up this entry, I would like to congratulate again the actors: Toby Regbo, Torrance Coombs, Adelaide Kane, Alan Van Sprang, Megan Follows… all of them were superb, amazing, and spectacular. If any of them reads this: congrats on your good work and thank you for showing us the great talent you all have, keep it up because we will be waiting for you after the summer break! Haha
