Apolo era el dios del sol y la música en la mitología griega. Daphne, una ninfa de los árboles. Entre los dos forman de uno de los mitos más conocidos, bonito y a la vez triste.
Apollo was one of the most powerful gods of the greek mythology, the God of the sun and the music. Daphne was a nymph of trees. Both of them are well known for the myth that surrounds them, beautiful and sad at the same time.

Eros maldijo a Apolo después de que éste se mofara de él, de manera que el dios del amor repartió dos flechas: una de oro y otra de hierro. La de oro incitaba al amor y la destinó a Apolo; la de hierro incitaba a la repulsión, y la destinó a la ninfa de la cual Apolo se había enamorado perdidamente: Daphne.
Ella había rechazado a múltiples pretendientes, alegando querer permanecer soltera pero su padre, Peneo (dios del río), la advirtió diciéndole que dada su belleza, no podría mantener alejados a quienes aspiraban a su amor.
After Apollo mocked Eros, the God of love decided to get his revenge by preparing two arrows: one made of gold and one of lead. The golden one meant love and was destined to Apollo; the lead one meant hatred and was meant for the nymph Apollo fell completely and madly in love with: Daphne.
She had refused to get married even having a lot of candidates because her wish was to remain single. Her father, Peneo (God of the rivers) warned her: she was too beautiful to do so and she wouldn't be able to keep her suitors away.
Cuando Apolo se enamoró de ella, persiguió a Daphne incesantemente hasta que estaba a punto de alcanzarla. Ante esto, la asustada Daphne pidió ayuda a su padre para que la no permitiera que Apolo la tocara. De pronto, la ninfa - por un encantamiento por parte de su padre - comenzó a transformarse en árbol del laurel: sus pies eran las raíces, su cuerpo el tronco, sus brazos las ramas y su pelo las hojas. Apolo prometió entonces que como no la podía tener como esposa, la amaría para siempre como su árbol y sus hojas coronarían las cabezas de héroes y líderes y que además la cuidaría con sus poderes de inmortalidad y eterna juventud para que siempre estuviera verde y hermosa.
When Apollo fell in love with her, he unceasingly chased Daphne to the point of being very close to reach her. Being aware of this, the fightened Daphne asked her father for help so that Apollo couldn't catch her. Sudently, the nymph - because of a powerful spell his father casted upon her - started to turn into the laurel tree: her feet turned into roots, her body turned into bark, her hair became leaves and her arms branches. Apollo then promised that although she couldn't be his wife, he will still love her forever: he will take care of her with his eternal youth and immortality powers so she will always be green and beautiful and also promised that her leaves will decorate heroes and leader's heads as crowns.
¿Y por qué vengo yo ahora con todo esto? Pues muy sencillo: ese nombre, Dafne (variante de Daphne en español) ha sido el elegido por mi hermano y mi cuñada para la que será su primera hija, mi sobrina :)
Aún quedan unos meses para verle la carita a la que será la consentida de toda la familia, pero hoy he decidido ponerme un poco moñas y dedicarle ya una entrada en el blog a ella, a su mito (de mis favoritos en la mitología griega por cierto), al significado de su nombre y la gran historia escondida tras el.
And why am I telling you this? Pretty easy: that name, Dafne (spanish version of Daphne) is the one that my brother and my sister-in-law picked to name their first baby girl, my niece ;)
There're still a few months to go until we can see her face and have her in my arms, but today I decided to be a bit sappy and dedicate this new entry to her, to her myth (one of my favorites of the greek mythology btw), to the meaning of her name and the great story hidden on it.
